We stopped in Richmond, VA on our way to Washington, DC.  We had to see the Edgar Allan Poe Museum. Poe was an original Goth; a dark poet and the inventor of the mystery story. Here is a life size cut out of Poe. You can see he wasn't much taller than me.

Picture
This is a quote from the exhibit. "Poe used this chair while working in the office of the Southern Literary Messenger from 1835 until 1837, His employer Thomas White is said to have cut down the back to encourage Poe to sit up straight."

Picture
This courtyard was designed with Poe's poem "To One in Paradise" in mind.
A green isle in the sea, love,
 A fountain and a shrine,
Here is a link to the entire poem.

This is a 111 year old train station in Richmond that is still running. We could have taken a train from here to DC. You can't see it from this photo, but it is five stories tall with a clock tower. It is fabulously decorated with carved roses in the arches.

My family and I went to Washington DC to march in the Million Puppet March. The Million Puppet March was a reaction to Mitt Romney's comment at the debate last month. He said he would take away all the PBS channels by stopping funding from the government. We know Sesame St. will be fine because they have plenty of money from the sell of their merchandise. But, the people who live out in the middle of nowhere who don't have many tv options, will need PBS. For example, if a big storm was coming and they had no idea, they would get really hurt. And, a lot of people use PBS to help teach their young children the alphabet and numbers. Some people who do not have a lot of money may use PBS shows to teach their children instead of  preschool. In this photo, you can see the Capital in the distance.

This is a banner with four people ( including the puppet). There were 1000 people there! You may not be able to see in this photo, but there were several tv stations and photographers.

My family and I went to the National Museum of the American Indian (at the Smithsonian).  When I walked in, I smelled fry bread. We tried several different foods at the cafe; fry bread with honey, mashed white sweet potatoes with chilies, wild rice, pine nut and arugula salad, roasted parsnips, rutabaga, and carrots, and  Esquites- roasted corn with creama. The Esquites and fry bread were my favorites.  I did not like the SPICY mashed potatoes or the spicy hot chocolate.

This is a photo of real Anesta sticks! You can see they look similar to the ones we made only smaller. You can also see the ball is the same size as ours too.

Picture
This is a tepee that the women made. The women  drew the designs and  then the men painted the horses. The women were in charge of putting up and  taking down the tepee as they traveled. And, they could do it in 20 minutes!

Picture
This is a scroll of the Cherokee alphabet. John White did not make this instead an Indian chief named Sequoyah made it. He was born near Knoxville, Tennessee, where my mom is from!

Picture
We went to the Smithsonian American History Museum and saw the First Ladies' gowns! This is Michelle Obama's gown. It is so magnificent! You can see me looking at it, through the glass.  I could not take my eyes off of the gown.

Picture
This is a photo of the  Lincoln Memorial.  Abraham Lincoln, our 16th President is huge in size (even without his big hat), and made of marble.  You could hear a pin drop in the Memorial as everyone was hushed by his size.  Abraham Lincoln will always be remembered as one of our great Presidents.  He freed the slaves and if he had been alive during Segregation he would have stopped that too.

Picture
This a photo of the Washington Monument, named after our first President George Washington. People were flying kites and playing kick ball in front of the Monument.  We could not go inside because it was closed.  The monument is being repaired, it has a big crack in it from an earthquake. I had a wonderful trip. I wish I had more time to explore all 19 museums at the Smithsonian! I would highly recommend a trip t

Dear Ava, your photo essay was extremely well done! You have your mom's eye for photography and your dad's way with words, of course, but the flavor is all yours! Your unique way of seeing AND appreciating what you see is a joy to behold. I can see you put your mind AND your heart into this; an unbeatable combination.
